Chaney root, botanically referred to as Similax Balbisiana, is a well-known herb used as a tonic. The Chaney root grows throughout the Jamaican woodlands but the herb is very widely cultivated in Woodland Country. The brown root contains significant amounts of iron and is popular amongst men.
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1: Soak (Important)
1. Rinse the dried root pieces briefly under cool water.
2. Place 1–2 ounces (about 28–56 grams) of dried Chaney root into a glass jar or bowl.
3. Cover with 2-3 cups of room-temperature water.
4. Let soak 8–24 hours (overnight is ideal).
Soaking softens the root and begins extracting minerals and plant compounds.
Step 2: Decoction (Simmer)
1. After soaking, pour the root + soaking water into a pot.
2. Bring to a gentle boil.
3. Reduce heat to low and simmer covered for 20–30 minutes.
4. Turn off heat and let steep an additional 10–20 minutes.
5. Strain and store in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
Reusing the Root (2–3 Times)
The same soaked root can be reused:
• Store the strained root in the refrigerator between uses.
• Each time, add fresh water and repeat the simmering process.
• The tea will become lighter with each batch.
• Discard once the flavor becomes very mild or after 3 uses.
Suggested Use
Traditionally consumed:
• ½–1 cup once or twice daily
